Condition

Bipolar Disorder

Episodes of elevated energy, reduced need for sleep, or irritability alternating with depression — including bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia.

What it can look like

  • Periods of unusually high energy, less need for sleep, rapid speech, or racing thoughts
  • Impulsive decisions, spending, or risk-taking during those periods
  • Episodes of depression in between
  • Mood shifts that others notice before you do
  • A history of antidepressants that made things worse or caused agitation

Experiencing some of these does not mean you have this condition. Many symptoms overlap, which is why a careful evaluation matters.

How it is evaluated

Bipolar disorder is frequently mistaken for depression, because people tend to seek help during the low periods. A careful evaluation asks specifically about past episodes of elevated mood or energy, family history, and how you have responded to previous medications. Getting the diagnosis right matters, because the treatment is different.

How treatment may help

Bipolar disorder is generally a long-term condition that responds best to steady care from someone who knows your history. Treatment focuses on stabilizing mood, reducing the frequency and severity of episodes, and planning ahead for early warning signs — with family involvement when you want it.

The role of medication

Mood stabilizers and certain antipsychotic medications are commonly used. Some require regular lab monitoring for safety, and several interact with other medications or medical conditions. Justina's experience with medically complex patients is directly relevant here.

When to seek urgent help. If you or someone you love is in danger — for example, thoughts of suicide, or severe impulsivity or agitation that cannot be managed at home — call or text 988 or call 911.
