What it can look like
- Intrusive memories, nightmares, or flashbacks
- Feeling constantly on guard, easily startled, or quick to anger
- Avoiding reminders of what happened
- Emotional numbness or detachment from people
- Trouble sleeping or concentrating
- Difficulty adjusting after a major life event, even without a single traumatic incident
Experiencing some of these does not mean you have this condition. Many symptoms overlap, which is why a careful evaluation matters.
How it is evaluated
You do not need to describe everything that happened in order to get help. A trauma-informed evaluation moves at your pace and focuses on current symptoms, how they affect your life, sleep, and safety. Justina evaluates and treats PTSD and adjustment disorders and screens for the depression, anxiety, and substance use that commonly accompany them.
How treatment may help
Trauma-focused therapy is often a central part of recovery, and Justina coordinates with therapists who provide it. Psychiatric care from Rosecare can address sleep, nightmares, hyperarousal, and co-occurring depression or anxiety so that therapy is more tolerable and daily life is more manageable.
The role of medication
Certain antidepressants are commonly used for PTSD, and specific medications may help with nightmares and sleep. As with every condition, recommendations follow an individualized evaluation.
When to seek urgent help. If you are having thoughts of harming yourself or others, or feel unsafe, call or text 988 or call 911.
