Geriatric Psychiatry

Mental health in later life is different. Medications behave differently in an aging body, psychiatric symptoms overlap with medical illness, and families are usually part of the picture. Older adults are the population Justina has cared for throughout her advanced-practice career.

For the person seeking care

New or worsening depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, or unusual beliefs in later life deserve a careful look rather than being written off as a normal part of aging. An evaluation considers your medical conditions and your full medication list alongside your psychiatric symptoms, and treatment is chosen with the sensitivities of an older body in mind.

For adult children and caregivers

Many people who reach out are looking for help for a parent. Common concerns include changes in mood or personality, agitation or withdrawal, confusion about whether a symptom is psychiatric or medical, a medication list that has grown unmanageable, and the strain of coordinating care across several providers.

Justina can evaluate psychiatric and behavioral concerns while taking medications and medical complexity into account, explain what she is seeing, and involve family in the plan with the patient's permission. She does not assume that every change is a psychiatric problem — sometimes the answer is a medication side effect or an untreated medical issue — and she says so.

Experience behind this care

Much of Justina's advanced-practice career has been spent with older adults in skilled-nursing and rehabilitation settings — psychiatric evaluation, medication management, dementia-related behavioral care, family education, and goals-of-care conversations are daily work there. She brings that experience, together with board certification in psychiatric mental health, to Rosecare.
